What is the importance of a mattress frame?

Choosing the right mattress frame can be a concern for many of us. Although there are not many types of mattress frames, their range is very wide. Additionally, many mattress manufacturers require us to buy a specific model even when we already have another, quite good frame.

This leads to many individuals contacting ONSEN® before purchasing the Osaka Air mattress to ask which mattress frame they should choose. Consumers are accustomed to the fact that when they buy a mattress, they often change the frame placed under it. This is usually due to the seller's suggestion, and sometimes even their requirement.

Mattress frame – simple

Most of us have a classic, simple mattress frame. These are usually made of wooden or plastic slats that can be attached to the bed frame in several ways. The slats themselves can also be connected in various ways, affecting their lifespan and physical properties.

A classic mattress frame consists of slats that are permanently attached to the bed frame and are not connected to each other. This design makes the bed more sturdy and thus more durable. However, such a mattress frame does not cushion movements, often reducing the lifespan of the bed frame.

There are also classic mattress frames that consist of rigid slats but are connected to each other using straps. Mattress frames with straps are not attached to the bed frame, which helps prevent its faster wear and tear. However, they still remain stiff and do not cushion movements.

Sometimes, simple mattress frames have additional legs that support them from below. These legs can be made of metal, but more commonly, they are made of wood or plastic. They make the mattress frame appear more solid and prepared to support greater weight.

Although many mattress manufacturers discourage the use of simple classic mattress frames due to their alleged acceleration of mattress wear and tear, in reality, a good mattress should not be significantly affected by them, or the impact should be minimal. A high-quality layered highly elastic mattress should not be prone to damage when placed on a classic frame.

Mattress frame – flexible

Flexible mattress frames are becoming increasingly popular, and they are primarily made from plastic rungs. However, sometimes these rungs are also wooden or wood-like, mainly from various types of plywood. Most often, they form a cohesive structure that is placed in the bed frame without permanent fastening. This allows for easy removal, cleaning, or replacement.

High-quality mattress frames made from flexible materials are often more durable than classic, simple frames. The basic difference is that their rungs are characterized by greater dynamics, which allows for their partial bending. They are located in pockets that ensure consistency of distance between the rungs. Some models of this type of mattress frame allow for additional firmness adjustment.

A flexible mattress frame is a solution that offers the most possibilities. If its design is well thought out, and the execution ensures appropriate quality, it will translate into its durability. At the same time, the dynamics of a flexible mattress frame significantly facilitates changing sleeping positions, sex, and other activities in bed, and even getting up. Additionally, it is usually lightweight enough to be an easy-to-transport product and facilitates cleaning the space under the bed.

Mattress frame – adjustable

Adjustable mattress frames are most often composed of two frame sections. The outer frame holds the second frame, and it's in the second frame that the slats are placed. While the first frame of such a mattress frame remains stationary, by changing the position of elements in the second frame, you can adjust individual zones of the slats.

These types of mattress frames usually allow for changing the head and foot positions, as well as adjusting the angles of inclination of its zones. Although this was done manually in the past, there are now many mattress frames available on the market that can be adjusted using a remote control or a smartphone app. This saves time and greatly facilitates, as well as fully automates, the entire process.

Mattress frames with adjustment functions are mainly suitable for good-quality highly elastic mattresses. These guarantee that the materials used in their production will not deform or get damaged. However, using them under mattresses made of closed-cell foam, as well as all kinds of coil spring mattresses and many other types of mattresses, is particularly risky.

Mattress frame – raised

A less popular adjustable mattress frame is essentially an intermediate type. It can be created from any of the previously described types of frames. However, it differs in that it is placed on an additional frame that allows for elevation. This additional frame is most commonly wooden, while in more expensive models, frames made of steel can be found.

Mattress frames with an elevation function should not affect the properties of the mattress. They are, however, an interesting and noteworthy solution for individuals who have storage containers for bedding or similar compartments under their beds. They provide easy access to items stored there. Therefore, they can combine functionality and, with the right type of mattress frame choice, also enhance bed comfort.

Mattress frame – warranty

Very often, mattress manufacturers in the conditions offered by their warranty state that it applies solely when using a mattress base with specified parameters. Many of them produce their own mattress bases, the use of which is a condition for the validity of the warranty. Although sellers rarely mention it, such practices are used frequently.

In reality, the choice of a mattress base should be our individual choice. It turns out that in many cases, mattress manufacturers offer bases of very low quality, which results in their low durability and the need for more frequent replacement. Meanwhile, in the market, there are many companies that produce mattress bases of significantly better quality.

When choosing a base for a mattress, there are actually several basic issues to consider. First and foremost, a mattress base should provide the best possible stability for the mattress on the bed. This means that it should not sag down under the weight of the mattress and the people sleeping on it. This can lead to damage to the mattress structure and, consequently, its deformation, which in this case can even happen with the best mattress.

A good mattress base must have rungs of the appropriate thickness and width to be durable. In addition, the spacing between the rungs should not be too large but should allow for free airflow. It is generally accepted that the thinner and narrower the rungs are, the shorter distances should be between them. For a standard 160x200 mattress, the mattress base should be able to withstand a load of at least 250 kilograms. It is also recommended that the base for a 100x200 mattress and larger be divided into two parts by a beam located in the middle.

In addition to these basic characteristics of the mattress base, its dynamics also plays a significant role. It is not as important as stability and should not affect the durability of the mattress or the bed itself. However, a mattress base with appropriate dynamics allows for easier changes in sleeping positions, as well as facilitating sex or getting out of bed. In the case of bases made of wood and non-elastic materials, the dynamics are practically zero, which is why bases made of plastic materials seem to be better.
The choice of a specific mattress base should not affect the mattress warranty terms.
It is difficult, therefore, to agree with the opinion of many mattress manufacturers, as well as mattress store retailers, that the choice of a mattress base should affect the warranty. This has very rarely any influence on potential mattress damage. Additionally, this impact is not statistically greater than in the case of damage caused by other factors.

The introduction of an obligation to purchase a specific base for a mattress from a particular company is therefore pointless. However, what is important is that while in the case of seller's liability for non-conformity of the mattress with the contract, such conditions would be incompatible with the law, in the case of the manufacturer's warranty, they can be established completely legally. Therefore, it is very important to familiarize yourself with all the documents, including the warranty, before purchasing a mattress.

All mattresses from the ONSEN® brand, including the Osaka Air mattress, can be used on various surfaces. According to the recommendations we have also included in the warranty card, mattresses offered by ONSEN® should be placed on a base or other support, such as pallets. The spacing between the rungs or ventilation holes must ensure adequate air circulation. In addition, the Osaka Air mattress can be used on the floor for a period of up to 100 days.

Products purchased from ONSEN® are covered by a warranty of up to 15 years, as well as a program allowing for their return within 100 days, which minimizes the risk of purchase to zero.

FAQ: Mattress frame

Which mattress frame to choose?

You should choose a mattress frame that will not collapse under the weight of the mattress and people sleeping on it, and will also allow ventilation of the mattress. A good mattress base should only meet these two criteria.

What rungs should a mattress frame have?

The mattress frame should have rungs of appropriate width and thickness. Whether the rungs are wooden or made of plastic, it does not matter much. Their dynamics and durability determine the thickness and width of the rungs, as well as the distances at which they should be placed.

How to make a mattress frame?

You can make a mattress frame yourself using wooden slats. You can also use plastic strips, but it must be plastic with high dynamics and resistance. It is enough to arrange them so that they provide proper support and allow ventilation of the mattress from the bottom. The thinner and narrower the rungs we use, the smaller the distances between them should be.

Does a mattress frame really matter?

Yes. The frame under the mattress is very important, because the stabilization of the mattress on the bed depends on it. It also affects the comfort and convenience of sleep. In addition, the appropriate frame under the mattress makes it easier to get up in the morning, as well as sex and other activities.

What to use instead of a mattress frame?

Instead of a mattress frame, you can use a different type of base made of any materials. It is important that what will replace the mattress frame has adequate ventilation holes and does not lead to mattress deformation. More and more often pallets are used instead of mattress frames, which are a very interesting solution.
